DEEP WELL SAMUI

Shallow well or drilled borehole: which does your property need?

Thailand has two very different kinds of well, and they are not interchangeable. How shallow ring wells and drilled boreholes differ in water, reliability and risk, and how to choose.

Ask for a well in Thailand and you can be quoted two completely different things. One is the traditional shallow well: concrete rings stacked into a wide, hand-dug shaft that collects water from the first few metres of ground. The other is a drilled borehole, a narrow cased hole that reaches down to water held in rock and deeper sand layers. Both are called wells, both produce water, and they behave so differently that choosing between them is really a choice about what you need the water to do.

What a shallow well actually is

A shallow ring well taps the water table nearest the surface. That water arrived recently: it is rain that soaked in nearby, filtered through a few metres of soil, and it rises and falls with the seasons. In a wet month the well can look generous. Late in the dry season, when gardens and neighbours are drawing hardest, the same well can drop to a puddle, because the layer it drinks from is the first one the dry season empties.

Being close to the surface also means being close to everything on the surface. Septic systems, fertilised gardens, animal pens and road runoff all drain toward the same shallow layer, and a wide, loosely covered shaft gives them an easy way in. Shallow water can test clean, but its quality is only as stable as the neighbourhood above it, and it deserves testing before anyone treats it as drinking water.

What a drilled borehole changes

A borehole passes through the shallow layer and takes water from much deeper formations, with steel or PVC casing sealing the shaft so surface water cannot leak down the outside. The result is a supply that is far more stable across the year, better protected from surface contamination, and usually able to sustain a submersible pump feeding a whole property. That is why drilled wells are what villas, resorts and developments on the islands actually run on.

Depth is not a fixed number: it is whatever the geology under your specific plot requires, which neighbouring properties can already hint at but only drilling confirms. Licensing is its own subject, since deeper wells fall under Thailand's groundwater rules.

So when is a shallow well the right answer?

Honestly: in narrower cases than sellers of shallow wells suggest, but they exist. A plot with a reliably wet shallow layer can water a garden or supply construction work cheaply, especially where demand is modest and seasonal dips are tolerable. An existing ring well on a newly bought property is worth testing and keeping for exactly those jobs. What a shallow well should not be asked to do is carry a household's drinking supply or a rental villa's reputation through April.

  • Garden and general outdoor use on a plot with a proven wet shallow layer: reasonable
  • Backup or construction-phase water while a project is built: reasonable
  • Sole supply for a family home, pool villa or resort: this is borehole territory
  • Drinking water without a lab test, from either kind of well: never

Choosing for your property

The decision usually reduces to three questions. How much water does the property draw, and in which months? What happens to you when the supply dips, an inconvenience or a cancelled booking? And is drinking-quality water part of the requirement? Modest, interruptible, outdoor-only demand keeps the shallow option alive. Anything continuous, anything guest-facing, anything potable points down, into cased ground.

Deep Well Samui installs cased boreholes across Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao, and the free site survey is where the shallow-versus-drilled question gets answered with your plot's actual conditions rather than a rule of thumb. If there is an existing well of either kind on site, we assess it as part of the same visit.
