DEEP WELL SAMUI

Private well or municipal water: which makes sense on Koh Samui?

Municipal supply is simpler to start; a private well buys independence. Which wins depends on where your property sits and how it's used.

On the islands this isn't really an either/or for everyone — plenty of properties run both, a municipal or village connection backed by a well or storage. But if you're deciding where to put your money, the trade-offs are worth laying out plainly.

Where municipal supply struggles

Coverage on Samui is patchy in the hills, and pressure drops through the dry season exactly where villa density is highest — Chaweng Noi, Bophut, Maenam. On Phangan it reaches less of the island; on Koh Tao there is no meaningful municipal supply at all. Municipal water is the low-effort option where it's reliable, and unreliable in precisely the places people build.

What a private well gives you

  • Independence from grid pressure and dry-season shortages
  • A supply sized to your property rather than shared with a growing neighbourhood
  • A lower running cost per cubic metre over time — though the upfront drilling cost is real
  • Control: with storage and a pump, you decide your own buffer

What a well asks of you in return

A well is infrastructure you own. It needs a permit where the law requires one, a pump that eventually wears, and occasional servicing — the well and pump don't vanish from your life the way a utility bill does. Water quality also depends on the ground: island groundwater often needs filtration before drinking, which a water test confirms rather than a brochure.

Common questions

Can I have both? Yes, and many do — municipal or village water as the default, a well or generous storage as the dry-season backstop. It's often the most resilient setup.

Is well water cheaper than municipal? Per cubic metre, usually over time — but a well has an upfront cost and ongoing pump and servicing, so it pays back over years, not months. The survey is where the numbers for your site get real.
